Description
Libellula pulchella, the twelve-spotted skimmer, is a dragonfly in the family Libellulidae. It is a large, striking dragonfly with three large, dark spots on each wing. They range throughout North America into southern Canada. They can be found at lakes and ponds with emergent vegetation. Males fly along the shores of the ponds and lakes and over the water, occasionally hovering or perching on twigs or vegetation. They are very territorial and aggressive, as well as formidable predators. Copulation occurs in flight and the females oviposit by releasing eggs that splash into the water; males guard the females while they are ovipositing.
