Description
The Humpbacked Flute Player is the human form of the cicada and is an ancient deity for the native people of the American southwest, representing fertility, agriculture, and music. He played his flute and danced at festivities and ceremonies. He led people on their seasonal migrations and guided Shamans when they traveled in the spirit world. Also known as Kokopelli, this deity was widespread and took on many forms, creating a complicated history. I painted this form based on a drawing on a vase from the Acoma Pueblo.
