Description
The ruddy daggerwing (Marpesia petreus, Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) is a butterfly in the brush-footed butterfly family. It is large, has a burnt-orange to red color and dorsal stripes on the front and hind wings that align to from lines that run from the upper edge of the forewing to the lower edge of the hind wing. It has a tail on the hind wings as well as an eyespot. It ranges from Brazil, throughout Central America, south Florida, and the West Indies. Sometimes this species will stray into Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Arizona, and Colorado. It was first described by Peter Cramer in 1776.
