Description
Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn will form a triple conjunction from 9 to 11 January 2021. Since the Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn on 21 December 2020, Jupiter and Saturn have been moving apart, but are still close together. Now, Mercury is joining these two giants. The planets will form a triangular geometry in the night sky, close enough for all three planets to be viewed within the field of a telescope or binoculars. As they proceed with their orbits, Mercury will catch up and pass Saturn then approach Jupiter. Jupiter will be the brightest of the trio, followed by Mercury; Saturn will be the dimmest. All three are visible to the naked eye. Because Mercury has an inner orbit to Earth, it is only visible from Earth at sunset or sunrise. This conjunction will be visible shortly after sunset and the planets will set shortly thereafter.
