Description
Castle Stalker is a small castle, or tower house, that sits upon a tidal island on Loch Laich in Scotland. The castle (Caisteal an Stalcaire in Scottish Gaelic) was first built in 1320. Its present form was finalized by the mid-15th century and was continually occupied, though often changing hands, until 1840, when the castle lost its roof and was subsequently abandoned. In 1965, it was purchased by Lt. Col. Stewart Allward. Over the next 10 years, Allward restored the castle. At present, the castle is privately owned. Visitors can tour the castle during the summer season, though during the summer of 2020 no visitors were allowed because of the COVID pandemic. When the tide is low, it is possible, though dangerous, to walk to the island. The recommended way to reach the island is to use a boat, canoe, kayak, or raft. The castle was featured in the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) as “The Castle of Aaaarrrrrrggghhh”. In the final scene, John Cleese plays a French castle guard leaning over the battlements of Castle Stalker and taunting King Arthur, who stands at the foot of the castle. No spoiler alert—I won’t mention how the movie ends! It is a picturesque castle in a beautiful land and shines with a history filled with stories.
